Huskies Look To Get Back On Track Against Rockets

DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team is back on the road for two games this week, starting with Wednesday night's matchup against the Toledo Rockets at Savage Arena. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. CT.
 
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with the radio call on 94-9 WDKB and the NIU Huskies app.
 
NIU (3-12, 1-3 MAC) is coming off a 65-48 loss to Bowling Green on Saturday at the NIU Convocation Center. The Huskies led by as much as six points in the first half before the Falcons rallied to take a 25-22 halftime lead. NIU cut an 11-point deficit to five with 7:47 to play in the fourth quarter but Bowling Green made four three-pointers down the stretch to pull away. 
 
Teresa Mbemba (Benguela, Angola/Presbyterian) led NIU with 15 points off the bench. She was 6-for-8 from the field, marking the fifth straight game Mbemba has shot 50 percent or better from the floor. In that five-game stretch the senior forward has accounted for 54 of the Huskies' 70 bench points. Mbemba is averaging 10.5 points per game and shooting 63 percent from the field in Mid-American Conference play.
 
Nevaeh Wingate (Liverpool, N.Y./St. John's) had a career-high six steals on Saturday with 14 points. She is the first Huskie in three years to have six steals in a game. Over the last five games Wingate is averaging 13.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. She was 6-for-8 from the free throw line on Saturday and is leading the MAC with 83 free throw attempts.
 
Toledo (7-7, 2-2 MAC) snapped a two-game losing streak on Saturday with a 59-46 win over Western Michigan at Savage Arena. The Rockets shot 42.4 percent from the field and outrebounded the Broncos 44-25. Sophomore guard Faith Fedd-Robinson led Toledo with 14 points and added five rebounds. Miriam Diala added 11 points and five rebounds. Toledo is third in the MAC in scoring defense, allowing 64.2 points per game. The Rockets are also third in the league in rebound margin at +6.9. 
 
The two teams split last season's two games, with the road team winning each game. NIU halted Toledo's 20-game home court winning streak on Jan. 1, 2025 with a 59-58 win at Savage Arena. The Rockets lead the all-time series 43-25.
 
NIU is on the road again on Saturday, Jan. 17 to face Ohio at 12 p.m. CT.
