MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Genevieve Wilson (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) opened the scoring after just 75 seconds but the Northern Illinois University women's soccer team fell, 3-1, to Horizon League leading Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 10) at Engelmann Stadium.
NIU (3-6-3, 2-3-1 Horizon) earned an early corner kick and
Monica Correa (Des Plaines, Ill./Saint Viator) whipped the ball in to near the top of the six-yard box where Wilson, who began her collegiate career at Milwaukee, took a touch off her chest before volleying a shot past Panther goalkeeper Lauren Nidey and into the back of the net to give the visitors the early lead.
The Panthers evened the game in the eighth minute on a goal from Ashlyn Skinner-Barrett. Emily Petring and Denise Camarena combined down the right wing before a cross came into the box to Skinner-Barrett on the edge of the six where she flicked a header past NIU goalkeeper
Alexandra Devory (Ruckersville, Va./William Monroe) to pull the home side level.
Milwaukee (8-4-2, 6-0-0 Horizon) went in front in the 21st minute on the first of two goals for Petring. A long ball from midfield found Petring about 10 yards outside the box and she worked her way just inside the 18 before chipping a shot over the head of Devory to give the Panthers the lead.
Petring scored her second goal of the contest less than 90 seconds into the second half. Petring shrugged off a NIU defender and played a one-two with Skinner-Barrett on the edge of the 18-yard box before she got the ball back just outside the top of the six and fired a shot into the roof of the net, giving Milwaukee a 3-1 advantage.
NIU will return home for its next two matches, beginning on Thursday, Oct. 15, when the Huskies host Detroit Mercy at 1 p.m. at the NIU Soccer Complex. Admission to all Huskie soccer matches is free of charge.
