Women's Basketball | February 13
DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team looks to wrap up its current three-game winning streak on a high note Saturday as it hosts the Akron Zips at 1 p.m. at the NIU Convocation Center.
Tickets are on sale at NIUHuskies.com/tickets and by calling the NIU Athletics Ticket Office at 815-753-PACK (7225). Saturday is NIU's annual Play4Kay game with fans encouraged to wear pink to support the fight against cancer. NIU Pink t-shirts will be distributed while supplies last. The Huskies will honor and recognize patients and survivors during the game.
Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with the radio broadcast available on NIUHuskies.com.
NIU (5-19, 2-10 MAC) is coming off a 75-54 loss to UMass on Tuesday night. Junior forward
Nevaeh Wingate (Liverpool, N.Y./St. John's) led the Huskies with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. It was Wingate's fourth straight game scoring in double figures. Over that stretch she is averaging 14.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, shooting 44.7 percent from the field.
Senior
Marta Hermoso (Seville, Spain/McNeese) scored a career-high 13 points on Tuesday night against UMass. She was 5-for-8 from the field and added three rebounds and three assists. Hermoso also had a career-high four steals and 34 minutes played. Eleven of her 13 points came in the second half. Hermoso had scored 15 points in the previous four games combined. Her previous career-high was nine points, last set at Central Michigan on Dec. 20.
Akron (5-19, 2-9 MAC) has lost two in a row after an 86-79 loss at Central Michigan on Wednesday night. It was the Zips' fourth straight game scoring over 70 points. Freshman guard Shaena Brew led Akron with a season-high 26 points and four assists, while classmate Monique Mitchell added 23 points. Sophomore Ni'Rah Clark leads Akron in scoring at 12.0 points per game, adding 5.5 rebounds per game.
NIU goes on the road on Wednesday, Feb. 18 to face Kent State. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. CT.
