NIU opened Friday by dropping the doubles point to North Dakota, but stormed back in singles and won all six matches. Sophomore
Lucia Yecora (Seville, Spain/IES V Centenario School) continued her winning ways, posting a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3.
Two Huskies pulled out three-set victories in sophomore
Theodora Kousiou (Thessaloniki, Greece/Aristotelio College) and senior
Nataly Ninova (Palma de Mallorca, Spain/IES Centre De Tecnificacio Esportiva IB). Kousiou defeated Jule Schulte of North Daokta 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1. Ninova dropped the first set 4-6, but rallied 6-1, 6-3 to secure the victory.
Freshman
Rebeca Garcia Miralles (Castellón, Spain/IES Sos Baynat) recorded her first singles win of the dual season, winning 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Against Northern Iowa, the Huskies got off to a quick start by locking in the doubles point within 30 minutes.
Garcia Miralles, Ninova and Yecora kept the momentum into the evening, each recording singles wins. The trio didn't let the opposition gain any momentum as the Huskies didn't give up more than two points across the three matches.
Sophomore
Irmak Budak (Istanbul, Turkey/SAJEV) and senior
Jenna Horne (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) also went 2-0 on the day in singles.
NIU returns home for another doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 8 against Judson and Milwaukee.
