CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team defeated both North Dakota and Northern Iowa by scores of 6-1 on Friday to improve to 7-2. The Friday evening win over Northern Iowa gave head coach Eric Burns the 100th win during his tenure with the Huskies.

NIU opened Friday by dropping the doubles point to North Dakota, but stormed back in singles and won all six matches. Sophomore Lucia Yecora (Seville, Spain/IES V Centenario School) continued her winning ways, posting a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3.

Two Huskies pulled out three-set victories in sophomore Theodora Kousiou (Thessaloniki, Greece/Aristotelio College) and senior Nataly Ninova (Palma de Mallorca, Spain/IES Centre De Tecnificacio Esportiva IB). Kousiou defeated Jule Schulte of North Daokta 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1. Ninova dropped the first set 4-6, but rallied 6-1, 6-3 to secure the victory.

Freshman Rebeca Garcia Miralles (Castellón, Spain/IES Sos Baynat) recorded her first singles win of the dual season, winning 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Against Northern Iowa, the Huskies got off to a quick start by locking in the doubles point within 30 minutes.

Garcia Miralles, Ninova and Yecora kept the momentum into the evening, each recording singles wins. The trio didn't let the opposition gain any momentum as the Huskies didn't give up more than two points across the three matches.

Sophomore Irmak Budak (Istanbul, Turkey/SAJEV) and senior Jenna Horne (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) also went 2-0 on the day in singles.

NIU returns home for another doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 8 against Judson and Milwaukee.
