DeKALB, IL - Senior pitcher
Max Vaisvila (Villa Park, Ill./Wabash Valley College) of the Northern Illinois University baseball team was named the Mid-American Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday for his performance in the Huskies' 5-0 win over Bowling Green on Saturday.
Vaisvila moved to 5-0 on the season with NIU's first one-hitter since 2014 on Saturday. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before allowing his first and only hit. Vaisvila is the first Huskie to throw a nine-inning shutout since Michael Lasiewicz on May 22, 2019 against Miami in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. He had a career-high 14 strikeouts on the day, the second-most in a single game in NIU history.
The senior lefty has not allowed a run in his last 17 innings pitched. Vaisvila has 36 strikeouts in his last 37 innings pitched with a 1.22 earned run average over that stretch. He leads the MAC with 50 strikeouts this season which puts him 41st in the nation. Vaisvila is also one of 27 pitchers in the country to have at least five victories with no defeats.
This is NIU's third MAC weekly honor of the season.
Danny Cihocki (Princeton, Ill./Lake Land College) earned Co-Pitcher of the Week accolades on Feb. 23 after his 10-strikeout performance in the Huskies' 3-1 win at Presbyterian.
Caden Robertson (Magnolia, Texas/Central Oklahoma) was named Player of the Week on March 9 after hitting .438 with four home runs, a double, a triple and 11 runs batted in in NIU's series win at Ohio.
The Huskies are on the road for a three-game series at UMass beginning on Thursday, April 2 at 2 p.m. CT.
