Quick Start Leads Huskies Past Green Bay

WEST LAFAYTTE, Ind.--  A quick start helped lead the Northern Illinois University Huskies softball team (6-6) to a 7-1 victory over the Green Bay Phoenix (4-16) as they wrapped up action at the Boilermaker Spring Classic.  
 
Jenna Turner (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) recorded her second straight multi-hit game, and third of the tournament, as she went 2-of-5 at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Izzi Hanna (Granger, Ind./Penn) saw her third straight game with a hit as she went 1-of-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored.
 
Hanna recorded the first hit of the game for the Huskies with a single up the middle before being joined on base by Danielle Stewart (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East). A Mia Morera (Simi Valley, Calif./Westlake 2 RBI double down the left field line sent the Hanna and Stewart across the plate for the opening runs of the contest. NIU's third run of the game via an RBI from Kayla Estrada (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) as Morera scored for the Huskies.
 
The Phoenix added their first run on an RBI single in the second inning, trimming NIU's lead to two at 3-1.
 
Turner notched her first hit of the game in the second inning before scoring her first run of the game.
 
Lia Nance (Oceanside, Calif./Oceanside) reached via an error by the Phoenix defense before stealing second. A Turner RBI single sent Nance home for the fourth run. Turner scored her second run on a defensive error got to second base on a fielder's choice. Hanna scored the final run of the game on an RBI single from Katy Ramage (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora Township).
 
Hannah Bolly (Beloit, Wis./Parker), who went five innings in the circle for NIU, held Green Bay to just one hit in the final two innings of the game. Bolly issued a pair of strikeouts, allowed just two hits, and issued a single walk in the contest.  
 
The Huskies will open the home portion of their season on March 13 as they host Buffalo in a doubleheader to start conference play. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Mary M. Bell Field and admission is always free.
