NIU Adds Charlie Wallrapp as Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach

DEKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois University men's basketball head coach Matt Majkrzak announced the addition of Charlie Wallrapp to the Huskie staff as an assistant coach on Friday (April 24). Wallrapp comes to DeKalb following three seasons as head coach at Division II Malone University in Canton, Ohio.

"Charlie is another former assistant at NMU," said Majkrzak. "He came in as we were making the jump from good to great. He was a huge part of that success as associate head coach, before becoming a head Division II coach at Malone University. He made an immediate impact there, guiding them to the NCAA Tournament. Charlie is a guy that has thrived at places that had fallen on hard times, and becoming an integral part in turning them around. He was also a standout player earning all-American honors before becoming a professional overseas."

Wallrapp guided the Pioneers to 45 victories over the past three seasons, which included a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Tournament championship in 2025 and the program's second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. Wallrapp's Pioneers finished the 2024-25 season averaging just 8.6 turnovers per game, the fewest in the nation. This past season, Malone ranked in the top-25 in NCAA Division II in scoring defense, allowing just 66.8 points per game.

"I am incredibly excited to join Coach Majkrzak's staff at NIU," said Wallrapp. "I can't wait to work with him again and help build another winning program. My wife and I are looking forward to becoming part of the DeKalb community."

Prior to his time at Malone spent three seasons at Northern Michigan, working for Majkrzak. Following a COVID-shortened season in his first year at Northern Michigan in 2020-21, Wallrapp helped the Wildcats to an 18-win campaign the following year, which included Northern Michigan's first appearance in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament championship game in 22 years. In 2022-23, Northern Michigan finished with a 25-8 mark, winning the GLIAC Tournament title while advancing to the NCAA Tournament Second Round.

Wallrapp spent two years at Kansas Wesleyan (2016-18) and two seasons at Clarke University (2018-20) prior to moving to Northern Michigan. During his time at Kansas Wesleyan, Wallrapp helped Terell Gandy earn Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2018.

At Clarke, Wallrapp helped the program win a school-record 24 games in 2019-20, earning its first national tournament appearance and its first national ranking, finishing the season ranked 22nd in the NAIA Division I national poll.

As a player, Wallrapp was a two-time All-American at Benedictine College in Kansas. A three-time all-conference honoree, Wallrapp scored 1,443 career points, 11th-best in Benedictine history while helping the program win the Heart Conference championship and advance to the Round of 16 of the NAIA national tournament in 2014. He went on to play professionally for the Newcastle Knights in England.

Wallrapp earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Benedictine in 2014, a postgraduate certificate in writing from Newcastle University in 2016 and a master's in business administration from Kansas Wesleyan in 2018.
