KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Northern Illinois University Huskies softball team was held to season-low hits in the series finale against the Western Michigan University Broncos. The Huskies (23-14, 16-6 MAC) fell 4-0 to the Broncos (24-23, 13-11 MAC) in the final road conference contest.
With yesterday's series win, the Huskies have won five conference series this season.
"We battled all weekend. Good to get the series, but always looking to win all three," said NIU head coach Kathryn Gleason. "We will get our bats going again to prepare for the week ahead."
How It Happened
The Huskie batters were retired in order through the first three innings, and NIU's defense matched that effort by keeping the Broncos off the bases early. Western Michigan didn't record a hit until the third, when Bella Duncan singled to center. A sacrifice bunt later in the inning brought home the first run of the game, giving the Broncos their first lead of the series. A two-RBI double capped the inning and extended the Western Michigan advantage to 3–0.
Jenna Turner (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) singled to left center field for the first hit of the game for the Huskies in the fourth inning.
Western Michigan added their fourth run in the fourth inning on a base hit.
Katy Ramage (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora Township) had the second hit of the game for the Huskies, coming via a single to lead off the inning. The Broncos defense quickly collected the final three outs and held NIU without a base runner in the seventh to avoid the sweep.
Madison Carlson (South Beloit, Ill./South Beloit) went 3.2 innings in relief and struck out two batters.
The Huskies will conclude action on the road when they travel to the University of Iowa on April 29. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. in Iowa City, Iowa.
