This Week in Huskie Athletics – April 28, 2026

DEKALB, Ill. – The Huskie men's golf team heads to the Mid-American Conference championship while the NIU softball team closes the regular season and the Huskie baseball team looks to stay near the top of the conference standings this week in Huskie Athletics.

NIU Baseball wraps up its current four-game homestand on Tuesday against the Valparaiso Beacons at 3 p.m. at Ralph McKinzie Field at Walt & Janice Owens Park. The Huskies scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning in last year's meeting at Valpo and hung on for an 8-6 win. Valpo head coach Brian Schmack played at NIU from 1992-95. This weekend NIU heads up to Mount Pleasant, Mich. for a three-game series against Central Michigan. The Huskies won last weekend's series against Eastern Michigan, taking two out of three games for their sixth consecutive series win. Freshman Wyatt Wawro hit .538 in the series to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. NIU won two out of three games against the Chippewas the last time it traveled to Central Michigan in 2024. At 16-8 in the Mid-American Conference, NIU is one game back of Kent State and Miami who are tied for the league lead at 17-7.

The Huskie softball team begins their final week of the regular season with a non-conference game at Iowa. The Huskies and Hawkeyes will have first pitch at 5 p.m. in Iowa City, Iowa. NIU will conclude the home season on May 1-2 as they begin a three-game series against Toledo. First pitch on May 1 is set for 3 p.m. at Mary M. Bell Field with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. on May 2. The Huskie softball program will honor their eight seniors, Ally Rodriguez, Lily Cassell, Trinity Jones Estrada, Cara Cruthers, Danielle Stewart, Jenna Turner, and Madison Carlson on Saturday.
 
NIU went 2-2 in action last week as they hosted Northwestern before traveling to Western Michigan. The Huskies took the doubleheader against Western Michigan, 7-2 and 2-1, before falling in the finale, to win their fifth conference series this season. Izzi Hanna, Danielle Stewart and Kayla Estrada went 2-of-3 at the plate in the first game of the doubleheader. Estrada had 4 RBIs in the game while Hanna scored two runs for the Huskies. Stewart and Hanna both scored hits in seven of the last ten games for the Huskies.


Men's Golf
Sunday-Tuesday, May 3-5: at MAC Championship (Zionsville, Ind.) – Live Scoring

The NIU men's golf team takes the course at The Course At Holliday Farms for the Mid-American Conference Championship starting on Sunday. Sophomore Conner McCall was the Huskies' top finisher at the Hoosier Collegiate April 18-19, tying for 22nd place with a 54-hole score of 223. It was the fourth time this season McCall led the Huskies at a tournament. McCall leads NIU in scoring average at 72.767. Junior Craig Long is second on the team with a 72.933 scoring average. Long was NIU's top finisher at last year's MAC Championship at Pinnacle Golf Club, tying for fourth place with a two-under par 214. The Huskies finished fourth as a team, it's fifth consecutive top-four finish at the MAC Tournament.
