DEKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois University Vice President/Director of Athletics and Recreation
Sean T. Frazier announced on Wednesday (August 19) a contract extension for Huskie men's soccer head coach
Ryan Swan, agreeing to a deal through the 2028-29 school year.
"Under Coach Swan's leadership our men's soccer program has consistently competed for championships," said Frazier. "Men's soccer has achieved at a high level both academically and athletically during his tenure and we look forward to continued success as we enter a new era in the Horizon League."
Swan enters his 10th season guiding the NIU men's soccer program in 2026, having guided the Huskies to a share of the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title a season ago. NIU went 8-5-4 during the 2025 season, which included a victory over Notre Dame, the program's first since 1994.
"I'm delighted to be the head coach here at NIU and for Sean Frazier and
Ryan Sedevie to continue to show trust in me," said Swan. "We have a lot of things we are looking to accomplish here, so having the opportunity to continue to lead the program is very exciting and I am grateful for that."
Last season's league title was the second in five years for Swan and the Huskies, who also won the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament championships in 2021. That season, NIU tied a school record with 15 wins and was ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 for a school record six consecutive weeks, climbing as high as 15th in the rankings as the Huskies. Swan was named the Gary V. Palmisano MAC Coach of the Year.
Following the 2021 season, Anthony Markanich became the first player in NIU history selected in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft when he was taken 26th overall by the Colorado Rapids.
During Swan's time guiding the Huskies, NIU has had two conference player of the year awards, three MLS draft picks, four all-region honorees and 18 all-conference selections. His 61 victories are currently third-most in program history.
In addition to its on the field accomplishments, the NIU men's soccer program has received the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award in nine of the past 10 seasons.
NIU men's soccer will open the 2026 regular season on Thursday, Aug. 20, when the Huskies travel to Butler.
