DeKALB, IL – Coming off one of the most historic seasons in Northern Illinois University baseball history, Vice President and Director of Athletics Sean Frazier announced on Tuesday a multi-year contract extension for head coach Ryan Copeland.
 
Copeland, who led the Huskies to a program-record 36 wins in 2026, will be under contract now through the 2032 season.
 
"Coach Copeland has made an immediate impact on our baseball program, leading our Huskies to a conference title and NCAA Regional appearance," said Frazier. "The team's progression on the field and in the classroom has been great to see, and this extension shows our belief that we can continue to compete for conference championships under his leadership. Ryan is a great leader and has created a great culture around the program."
 
Under Copeland's guidance the Huskies went 36-19, winning their first Mid-American Conference title in program history in his third season as head coach. NIU earned the #3 seed in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, the Huskies' first NCAA appearance since 1972. On May 29 NIU defeated Coastal Carolina 12-10 for the program's first NCAA Tournament win. Copeland was named the ABCA/ATEC NCAA Division I Midwest Region Coach of the Year on June 23.

"We have an outstanding administration who continue to prioritize the needs of our student-athletes. The support we have received from donors, alumni and fans during our first three years has been remarkable. I'm excited to call DeKalb home for the next several years as we continue to elevate the standards and expectations of our program."
 
Copeland has won 78 games in his first three seasons in DeKalb. That is the most wins in a three-year stretch for NIU since the Huskies won 81 games from 2009-11. He earned his 200^th career win as a head coach on May 1 in NIU's 12-1 victory at Central Michigan.
 
The Huskies have had nine All-Conference selections in the last three years with four in 2026. Pitcher Max Vaisvila was NIU's first First Team All-Conference selection since 2016 after posting an 8-0 record with a 3.09 earned run average, striking out 87 batters in 85.2 innings pitched. Vaisvila was a semifinalist for National Pitcher of the Year and an ABCA/Rawlings Midwest All-Region First Team honoree. He signed a free agent contract with the New York Yankees on July 13.
 
NIU has set nine single game and single season records during Copeland's tenure. Huskie pitchers have set the single season strikeout record twice in the last two seasons with 450 in 2025 and 458 this season. On May 21^st NIU struck out a single game record 18 batters in its 6-5 15-inning win over Miami at the MAC Tournament. Offensively NIU scored a program-record 415 runs in 2025 with a record 82 home runs. The Huskies have set the single season walks record in each of Copeland's three seasons, with 250 in 2024, 259 in 2025 and 291 last season.
