Triple-threat athlete with 12 Northern Illinois letters in three sportsÑfootball (4), basketball (4), and track (4)Ñand All-Century Team votes on gridiron and hardwood. Earned "NI" monograms in football (1935-38), basketball (1935-39), and track (1936-39). Played key role in league titlists in three sports. Known for elusive running ability and described as "spectacular" and "dazzling" in football. "In Chet Davis," reported the student newspaper, "the team has a scoring threat from any spot on the field." Starred at QB, HB, and DB on Huskie grid squads that compiled 20-7-6 cumulative won-lost-tie mark, posted seven shutouts (1935), and won Little 19 Conference title (1938). Named AP & UP(I) First-Team All-Little 19, plus International News Service Second-Team All-Little 19 as soph (1936). Rushed for three TDsÑincluding 57-yarderÑvs. Wheaton (10-17-36). Ran for TD and caught one vs. Wisconsin-Stevens Point (10-24-36). "Revived" team with TD and two interceptions vs. Wheaton (10-15-38). Won UP(I) All-State, plus AP and UP(I) Second-Team All-Little 19 honors on 6-1-1 loop champs as senior. Served as team cage captain on Little 19 kingpins (1938-39). Ranked No. 2 in team scoring as frosh (67 points) and soph (64 points). Owned "uncanny ability to slip down to the FT circle and drop in long push shots." Led track team in scoring (113 1/4 points) on Little 19 outdoor champs (1939). Captured Little 19 outdoor titles in high jump (1936) and 100-yard dash (1938), plus indoor high jump crown (1936).
