"The Receptionist." Went from walk-on JC punter to one of all-time pass catchers in NCAA ranks. Master of sideline curl at 6-1, 180 pounds. Compared to NFL great Raymond Berry for disciplined routes. Led NCAA Division 1-A with Northern Illinois record 91 receptions, 1,215 catch yards, and 11 TDs as senior (1978). Won NCAA receiving crown by 29 catches. Caught most single-season 1-A passes (at time) with only three national exceptionsÑTulsa's Howard Twilley (134 in 1965 and 85 in 1964), BYU's Jay Miller (100 in 1973), and Idaho's Jerry Hendren (95 in 1969). Received highest Division 1-A accolade in NIU history (at time)ÑThird-Team AP All-America (1978). Named team tri-MVFirst-Team All-MAC, and MAC Co-Offensive Player of Year as senior for NIU coach Pat Culpepper. "There are two types of receiversÑthe burner and the worker," Culpepper noted. "David's a great worker. He can cut on a dime and he doesn't round off the routes." Named on All-Time Huskie Stadium Team (1995) and First-Team All-Century unit (1999). One of only four NIU gridders with retired jersey (No. 6). Caught 148 career balls for 1,958 yards, and 16 TDs (1977-78). Finished No. 7 in NCAA 1-A receiving (57 receptions for 743 yards and five TDs) and voted team MVP as junior (1977). Played in Can-Am Game (1978). Signed free agent pacts with NFL Chicago Bears, CFL Saskatchewan Roughriders, and USFL Chicago Blitz (1979-81). Served as assistant on 10-2 HOF Cal Bowl unit (1983). Waldorf (IA) College transfer.
