Rules and Regulations
 
Prohibited Categories - Prohibits college athletes from promoting: Sports betting; Gambling; Alcohol; Tobacco; Marijuana; Vaping products; Adult entertainment; or Any other product “considered to be inconsistent with the values of a postsecondary institution” or which would bring “embarrassment, scandal, or ridicule” to a college or university.  

Potential Tax Implications - Student-athletes are responsible for reporting all taxable income made in NIL agreements to the IRS. NIU is not responsible for failures to report taxable income for or on behalf of any student-athlete.
 
Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL):
Student-athletes that participate in NIL activities are required to disclose their activities in ARMS, according to Illinois State Law; deals with a value of $500 or more require a written contract to be included with the disclosure. The disclosure in ARMS will adhere to the request of the NCAA NIL rule which includes: 
(a) Names and contact information of individuals involved in the activity, including a description of the nature of the relationship between such individuals; 
(b) Terms of the arrangement, including a description of services rendered, rights granted, term duration, compensation and payment structure (e.g., cash, barter, deferred); 
(c) Names and contact information of professional service providers involved in the arranging, negotiating, or securing the disclosed activity, including a description of the nature of the relationship between the service provider and individuals involved in the activity; and 
(d) Terms of compensation between the professional service provider and the student-athlete (e.g., agent contingency fee). 
Disclosures should be completed within 14 days of an agreed upon contract. Based on NCAA rules, the institution cannot assist student-athletes with NIL activities, identifying NIL opportunities, contract assistance, etc., unless they disclose their NIL activities.
