Marcelo Campolina begins his second season as an assistant coach with the NIU men’s soccer program in 2018. Campolina came to NIU after two seasons as an assistant coach at Midwestern State.
In his first season with the Huskies, Campolina helped first-year head coach Ryan Swan began a rebuilding process that was highlighted by a season-opening, overtime victory over DePaul and a win over 10th-ranked Omaha, NIU’s first victory over a top-10 foe since 2008. Six Huskies earned Academic All-MAC honors in Swan’s first season while goalkeeper Drew Donnally earned the MAC Medal of Excellence.
In his two seasons as the goalkeepers coach at Midwestern State, Campolina helped the Mustangs to a combined 35-5-2 record and a pair of appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament. In 2015, Campolina helped Midwestern State to a 17-1-1 record and a trip to the third round of the NCAA Tournament as the Midwestern State goalkeepers combined for a 0.93 goals against average and eight shutouts to rank in the top 30 in the country.
The following season, the Mustangs posted an 18-4-1 mark and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Campolina's goalkeepers recorded 12 shutouts, breaking the Midwestern State school record, and posted a 0.65 goals against average, finishing ninth in Division II.
A native of Formosa, Goiás, Brazil, Campolina began his coaching career at the São Paulo Futebol Center in 2005, where he led the U-13 and U-15 boys programs, as well as the women's program and goalkeepers. Campolina guided the U-13 boys team to the national championship in 2007 and the women's program to a national championship in 2006.
Campolina joined the American School of Brasilia in 2007 as head coach of the varsity boys and girls programs. He led the boys team to third place in the national championship in 2010. During his time at the American School of Brasilia, Campolina also worked as an assistant coach with the volleyball and softball programs.
In 2011, Campolina became the head soccer coach at the Brasilia International School. He also spent time at Associação Atletica Do Banco Do Brasil and with the professional club, Brasilia Futebol Clube, prior to his time at Midwestern State.
As a player, Campolina spent a pair of seasons playing professionally in his native Brazil, playing with Samabaia Futebol Clube in 1999 and Sociedade Esportiva do Gama in 2000.
Campolina earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Catholic University of Brasilia and his master's in exercise physiology from Midwestern State.
