Tyler Doll begins his third season as a member of the NIU men’s soccer staff in 2022, having joined the Huskies as a volunteer assistant for the 2020-21 campaign. Doll works primarily with the Huskie goalkeepers.
Doll helped NIU to one of the finest seasons in program history in 2021 as the Huskies tied a school record with 15 wins and won the Mid-American Conference double as regular season and tournament champions, a first for the program since 2006. NIU made its fourth all-time NCAA Tournament appearance, advancing to the second round for the third time, and finished the season ranked 21st in the United Soccer Coaches national rankings.
NIU was ranked for a school record six consecutive weeks during the 2021 season, climbing as high as 15th on Nov. 2. The Huskies won three games against ranked opponents, defeating No. 18 Marquette (Sept. 10), No. 4 West Virginia (Oct. 9) and No. 19 Akron (Oct. 30). The fourth-ranked Mountaineers were the highest-ranked foe NIU has beaten since 2008. The Huskies also finished the season with the nation’s eighth-best offense, averaging 2.45 goals per game.
Doll helped mentor First Team All-MAC goalkeeper Martin Sanchez, who became the first Huskie goalkeeper to earn all-conference accolades in 10 seasons. Sanchez finished the season with eight shutouts, 12th-best nationally. NIU had four First Team All-MAC honorees in total, including conference player of the year Nick Markanich.
Following the season, Anthony Markanich made school history as he became the first Huskie selected in the first round of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft, going 26th overall to the Colorado Rapids. Nick Markanich was selected four picks later by FC Cincinnati.
In his first season at NIU, Doll helped Sanchez finish third in the MAC in saves (31) and lead the conference in minutes played by a goalkeeper (1263). NIU recorded a season sweep of Akron for the first time since 1990, topping 15th-ranked Akron in DeKalb on March 14 and the 21st-ranked Zips on April 4 in Akron.
During the summer of 2021, Doll played locally with DeKalb County United and coaches with local youth club, Northern Illinois Football Club.
