Shao-Yu Yu completed his third season as a graduate assistant with the NIU men’s tennis team in 2023-24, having returned to the Huskie program after finishing his playing career in 2020.
2023-24
In 2023-2024 season, ShaoYu was Served as Interim Head Coachfor eight duals and the Huskies went 6-2 in those duals. Served as GA for remainder of season as Huskies finished second in the MAC Regular Season... NIU advanced to the MAC Conference Tournament... Saul Berdullas was named the MAC Freshman of the year and Cheng En Tsai and Mikael Vollbach earned MAC First Team honors...
2022-23
In 2022-2023 season, ShaoYu helped NIU earned 13 victories and had a pair of Second Team All-MAC honorees in Oliver Valentinsson and Mikael Vollbach... Iker Gaztambide Arrastia became the second Huskie in three seasons to be named MAC Freshman of the Year. Three huskies claimed Academic ALL-MAC recognition.
2021-22
During Shao-yu’s first season on staff in 2021-22, the Huskies won 11 matches and advanced to the MAC Tournament. Oliver Valentinsson earned First Team All-MAC honors while Kristopher Ortega was named to the All-MAC Second Team and six Huskies claimed Academic All-MAC recognition.
2020-21
In 2020-2021 season, ShaoYu served as volunteer assistant coach for NIU Men’s tennis...Finish second in MAC, and ranked No. 37 in NCAA... Mikael Vollbach was named Freshman of the year.. Bor Muzar and Kris Ortega earned first team all MAC... Oliver Valentinsson was also named to the Second team all MAC
Playing Career
Shaoyu was a former huskies for Men’s tennis program. During his two years at NIU, ShaoYu posted 27-19 in singles play and 22-17 in doubles play. Before coming to NIU ShaoYu spent two season at Columbus State University. In the two season at Columbus State University, ShaoYu helped Columbus State reached NCAA semifinals at his freshman year, and helped winning its first ever NCAA championship in the program history.
ShaoYu began his college career at Columbus State, 10-6 in singles and 12-4 in doubles play. In his Second season, ShaoYu finished 3rd in south east ITA regional Doubles, and ranked no.5 for south east region.... ranked no. 50 in singles NCAA nationally… ShaoYu went 3-0 in singles play and 20-5 in doubles… Also named for Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Team

ShaoYu earned his bachelor degree in Psychology with Sociology/criminology minor in 2020. ShaoYu later earned his master degree in MSEd Mental Health Counseling master degree in 2024 during his time serving as a GA at NIU.
Before coaching at NIU ShaoYu worked in tennis club and high school as Mental toughness tennis coach.... Have experiences working with high level junior prospects in Taiwan and ATP & WTA players, including 2019 at US Open coaching Cheng Peng Hsieh, who played main draw doubles and ranked ATP 64...
