Chris Weiss, who earned his degree in kinesiology from Northern Illinois University in 2005, joined the NIU gymnastics coaching staff in 2013 as an event coach while also serving as the team's strength and conditioning coach.
Certified with the American College of Sports Medicine and a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Weiss develops, administers, and oversees the strength and conditioning program of the team. Along with head coach Sam Morreale, he works extensively with the Huskie gymnasts on uneven parallel bars.
Under the current coaching staff of Morreale, associate head coach Nita Teague and Weiss, the Huskies recorded their top finishes all-time at the MAC Championships, topped by winning the first MAC Championship in NIU women’s gymnastics history in 2019. NIU was second in 2018, 2021 and 2022.
The NIU bars squad has posted 10 of its Top 12 scores all-time over the last eight years. In 2022, NIU broke the seven-year old bars team record by scoring a 49.325 on the event. THree of the Huskies’ top seven team bars scores have been earned in the last two years, and Weiss has helped coach NIU MAC Champions Ashley Potts (2017) and Natalie Hamp (2021 and 2022) on the event. Hamp and Jamyra Carter were each named MAC Specialist of the Year for their work on bars in 2021 and 2017, respectively.
Carter (2016), Courtney Dowdell (2017), Hamp (2021 and 2022) and Al-Ashari (2023) have all competed on bars at NCAA Regionals with Hamp tying for fourth at the 2021 NCAA Salt Lake City Regional with NIU’s top score at Regionals on any event. During his tenure with the Huskies, six all-arounders have also advanced to Regionals.
Weiss is the owner and founder of Custom Fit Gym in Sycamore, where he works as a personal trainer and fitness instructor teaching classes and counseling on nutrition.
From 2002 to 2007 he was employed at the Energym Sports Campus as the Director of Boy Gymnastics where he developed, administered and oversaw competitive male gymnasts from instructional to highly competitive levels ranging between the ages of four and 18.
Weiss attended NIU from 2001 to 2005 where he was the president of the men's gymnastics club while also competing for the team. A graduate of Rolling Meadows High School, Weiss and his wife, Amber, have a daughter, Jade.
