A native of Alexander City, Alabama, Robert Spain joined the NIU men's soccer program as an assistant coach and goalkeepers coach in January of 2015. In addition to his duties at NIU, Spain also serves as the Director of Coaching for Northern Illinois FC. 

Spain joins the Huskie staff following one season as head coach at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, a NCAA Division III institution. The Bobcats improved from 3-16 in 2013 prior to Spain's arrival to 12-7-1 in Spain's one season as head coach. In Spain's lone season at Pitt-Greensburg, the Bobcats achieved the program's first postseason win in a decade and recorded the school's first winning season in a decade. 

Prior to his time at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, Spain was an assistant coach and goalkeepers coach at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa., in 2013, and was an assistant for both the men's and women's soccer programs at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, in 2010-11. Spain also spent time working in the front office of the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer during their 2011 and 2012 MLS Cup championship seasons. 

Spain played collegiately at the University of Charleston in Charleston, W. Va., where he helped the team to a 19-4 record in 2009, including a WVIAC regular season and tournament championship. Spain served as a team captain as the program claimed the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional championship. 

Spain graduated cum laude from Charleston with a degree in Sport Administration in 2010 and was awarded the NCAA Division II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award. Spain is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and holds a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.
