Three Huskies Earn Conference Honors

March 7, 2016

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Three Northern Illinois University Huskies received league honors as the Mid-American Conference named its all-league teams today. Sophomore Marin Maric (Split, Croatia/La Lumiere School) was named to the All-MAC Third Team, Marshawn Wilson (Oakdale, Minn./Hill-Murray) was named to the All-Freshman Team and junior Aaric Armstead (Chicago, Ill./La Jolla Prep) was named to the All-Defensive Team.

Maric led the Huskies in both scoring and rebounding as he averaged 12.3 points per game, 21st in the MAC, and 8.5 rebounds per contest, fifth in the conference. The sophomore from Croatia has recorded 14 double-doubles this season, the third-most in the MAC and tied for 26th in the nation. Maric also ranks fifth in the conference in blocks, averaging 1.3 per contest, and 10th in field goal percentage, shooting 49.3 percent.

Maric is the first Huskie to make an All-MAC team since 2010-11 when Xavier Silas was named to the All-MAC First Team, Jordan Threloff earned All-MAC honorable mention recognition in 2013-14.

Wilson has scored in double figures 14 times this season and is averaging 10.8 points per game, third-best among MAC rookies. The Oakdale, Minn., native is averaging 23.2 points per 40 minutes, fourth-best among all players in the conference. Wilson scored a career-high 26 points at Eastern Michigan (March 1), the most points by a Huskie since Feb. 20, 2014 when Jordan Threloff netted 27 points.

Wilson is the third all-freshman team honoree during head coach Mark Montgomery’s tenure at NIU. Abdel Nader was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team in 2011-12 and Aaric Armstead earned all-freshmen recognition in 2013-14.

Armstead was named to the MAC All-Defensive Team, which was recognized for the first time this year. The Chicago native spearheaded one of the best defensive units in the conference as the Huskies allowed just 67.3 points per game, second-best in the MAC, and opponents shot just 40 percent from the field, the lowest mark in the MAC. Armstead averaged 5.7 rebounds per contest, 15th in the league, and also recorded 1.0 steals per game.

NIU will open play in the MAC Tournament tonight with a first round home game. The seventh-seeded Huskies will host 10th-seeded Western Michigan at 7 p.m., at the NIU Convocation Center.
