Evanston, IL -- Senior Sam Hiatt continued his impressive start to the season as he recorded a sixth-place finish in the 133-pound weight class at the Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern University on Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, IL.

Competing at one of the nation's premiere mid-season events, Hiatt, ranked No. 11 nationally, won his first-three matches before falling to top-ranked Mark Jayne of Illinois by a 5-2 margin in the semifinals.

Now 13-5 on the season, Hiatt opened with 5-0 and 7-5 wins over Ryan Froese (Michigan State) and Curry Pickard (North Carolina-Pembroke), respectively, before defeating 10th-ranked T.J. Enright of Ohio State in the quarterfinals.

Hiatt dropped his final two matches to No. 5 Matt Sanchez (Cal-Bakersfield) and Jason Borrelli (Central Michigan) in the consolation bracket, to earn the sixth-place showing.
