Illinois Men’s Golf Finishes 10th At 17-Team FirstEnergy Intercollegiate
In Akron, OH
AKRON, OH —
Senior Joe True shot a final round 1-under-par 71 to lead the Northern
Illinois University men’s golf team into 10th place after the
completion of play at the 2004 FirstEnergy Intercollegiate in Akron,
OH.
Hosted by the University of Akron at the nationally-renowned Firestone
Country Club, the 54-hole event was won by Xavier, who shot a three-day
total of 861 to claim a two-shot win over the Toledo Rockets. Toledo’s
Brad Heaven grabbed a six shot win with three consecutive under-par
rounds of 70-67-69--206.
Northern Illinois opened the day in 12th place, but moved two spots
up the standings and into 10th with its final-round 298. The Huskies
finished ahead of MAC rivals Akron, Eastern Michigan and Bowling
Green.
For True, it’s the second consecutive time the Collinsville,
IL, native has led the Huskies. Following a season best 10th-place
showing at Marshall Invitational (April 9-10), True shot rounds
of 78-73-71--222 to tie for 27th. The top-30 finish was True’s
fourth of the year.
“Joe simply got better each round,” head coach John Cleary
said. “His consistency has been there the last two events and
that’s important as we enter the MAC Championships.”
Nicholas Schenk finished one shot behind True in a tie for 33rd.
Aided by birdies on each of his last three holes, Schenk fought
back from a 4-over-par 76 in his second round to shoot 74 and move
seven shots up the individual standings.
Dan Gratton also jumped up the standings with his best round of
the tourney. Tied for 51st enter the day, Gratton carded a 1-over-par
73 to move into 37th and finish among the top three Huskies for
the second time this season.
“We got three good efforts on Sunday, but now we are looking
for two more,” Cleary said. “We’re not that far off,
but we need that total team effort. There are some great teams in
this conference and you need five low scores to work up the standings.”
Aaron Conlon and Ethan Roush rounded out the NIU scoring on the
day. Roush finished tied for 64th with a three-round 232, while
Conlon tied for 87th with a three-day total of 239.
Mike Spielmann competed as an individual and shot a final-round
78 to tie for 74th.
