Huskie Women's Tennis breezes to 7-0 sweep of undermanned toledo squad
TOLEDO, OH---Playing against a University of Toledo squad that had just five players (three of which were either freshmen or sophomores), Northern Illinois University jumped ahead early and stayed there, cruising to a 7-0 victory over the Rockets in Mid-American Conference women's tennis action Saturday (Apr. 23).

NIU closes out the 2004-05 regular season at 7-9 overall in dual meets with a 3-6 mark in MAC contests. Toledo falls to 9-13 with a 1-8 conference ledger.

Toledo actually dropped down to four serviceable players by the time the meet had concluded due to an injury to No. 3 singles player Daniela Moran. The retirement gave Huskie freshman and reigning MAC Player of the Week Chrissy Svetlic (Kansas City, MO / Park Hill South) one of five solo victories for the visitors on the afternoon.

Ivonne Andrade (San Luis Potosi, Mexico / Instituto Lomos de Real) and Dora Delgadillo (San Luis Potosi, Mexico / Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores) both notched straight set victories with Andrade taking out Viviana Rivero 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Delgadillo was just as convincing, picking up a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Claire Smalley at No. 5.

The road wasn't quite as easy for Cassie Drake (Stilwell, KS / Shawnee Mission South) or Daniela Martinez (Mexico City, Colegio Eton). The seniors---who were both playing in their final regular-season meet for the Huskies---each needed a third-set tiebreaker to claim victory. Drake topped Myriam Cueva 6-0, 5-7 (10-6) in the No. 1 slot while Martinez bounced back from a rough start to defeat Sarah Thompson 4-6, 6-0 (10-5) at No. 4.

No tiebreakers were needed in doubles play to start the day as the Huskies set the tone early with two dominating victories. Drake and Delgadillo shut out Thompson and Smalley 8-0 in the No. 2 spot just before Andrade and Svetlic beat Cueva and Rivero 8-2 in the top spot to seal the tandem point. UT had to default the No. 3 flight due to the undermanned roster.

Like the rest of the conference, Northern Illinois heads to Muncie, IN, for the 2005 MAC Championships next weekend. Action is scheduled to begin late Thursday (Apr. 28) afternoon and run through Saturday (Apr. 30) weather permitting.
