2006 NORTHERN ILLINOIS FOOTBALL
NIU vs. Temple Postgame Notes
October 21, 2006
***Chris Nendick set a school record for most points scored by kicking in a game with 19 on five field goals (in seven attempts) and four PATs. Nendick's five threes (of 36, 24, 22, 36 and 21 yards) tied the NIU school record for most field goals in a game, first set by Vince Scott vs. Ohio on Nov. 6, 1982. He is the ninth player in MAC history to hit five field goals a game, tying for third on the MAC single game list.
***Nendick's 19 points kick scoring in a game are tied for second all-time in the MAC. The MAC record for points by kicking in a game is 24. Nendick is tied with Rusty Hanna of Toledo, who scored 19 points versus NIU in 1992.
***His seven field goal attempts were also a school record for field goal attempts in a game. Nendick broke the single game attempts record previously held by Rome Mega (11/19/77 vs. Ohio) and Lance Lasseigne (10/15/94 vs. Pacific). The seven attempts also are tied for second all-time in the MAC with Rusty Hanna of Toledo (vs. NIU in 1992).
***Nendick's 40 career field goals ranks fourth on the NIU career list, just one behind Vince Scott, who had 41 threes from 1980-83 to rank third on the career list. His 15 field goals on the season ranks tied for seventh-highest on the Northern single season list.
***Huskie "firsts" today - wide receivers Jarret Carter, Matt Simon and Greg Turner each recorded the first touchdown catches of their careers. Melvin Rice had the first interception and the first INT by a Huskie defensive back this season.
***NIU posted its best passing day of the season as quarterbacks Phil Horvath and Dan Nicholson combined for 377 yards on 27 of 42 passing with four touchdowns and one interception. It was a season high for yards, attempts and completions.
***The last time Northern Illinois held an opponent to negative yards rushing (-6 today) was Oct. 18, 2003 versus Western Michigan when the Broncos had minus 2 yards on 18 carries.
***The last time Northern Illinois had four different players catch touchdown passes in a game was on September 18, 2004 in a 48-41 loss to Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. In that game, Phil Horvath hit Sam Hurd, Brad Cieslak, Shatone Powers and Dan Sheldon for scores.
***Sophomore defensive end Larry English collected 4.5 quarterback sacks in the game, including four in the first 21 minutes of the game to set an NIU school record for most sacks in a game. The previous record of three was accomplished 10 times, most recently by current Huskie defensive end Ken West, who tallied three sacks versus Central Florida on Oct. 9, 2004.
***NIU improved its record in homecoming games to 62-28-10. The Huskies have now won nine straight homecoming games.
***Northern Illinois blocked its second punt in as many games when Dustin Utschig broke through in the second half. NIU now has two blocked punts on the year and has blocked three kicks total.
***For the second time this season, Northern Illinois did not attempt a punt in the game. NIU also did not punt versus Ball State.
