Buffalo, NY - Throughout the season, the Northern Illinois women's cross country team found its most success when the Huskies traveled in packs.
Saturday's performance at the Mid-American Conference Cross Country championships, hosted by Buffalo, proved quite the opposite, as NIU's top five runners scored from anywhere from 26th to 80th, as the Huskies finished last at Beaver State Island Park.
"We were too spread out today," NIU assistant cross country coach Mark McConeghey said. "We have been working well and practicing well as a pack. We're able to run and feed off of each other's energy and that's a plus. Unfortunately we got spread out early and we didn't run as well as we could have today."
Huskie junior Mia Supanich-Winter (Libertyville, Ill.) topped NIU with a 26th-place finish of 21:33.05. NIU senior Jessica Schauff (Dixon, Ill.) placed 44th with a mark of 21:57, followed by sophomore Ashley Rittenbacher (New Lenox, Ill.), Meghan Ginter (Aurora, Ill.) and Allison Grissom (Naperville, Ill.).
Rittenbacher finished 63rd overall with a time of 22:25, followed by Ginter (64th, 22:27) and Grissom (80th, 23:19).
Ohio's Carime Reinhart crossed the finish line with a first-place mark of 20:02.9, followed by Buffalo's Mary Veith (20:37), Ohio's Andrea Mass (20:39), Bowling Green's Kim Settlle (20:41) and Akron's Sediah Erskine (20:47.1).
Ohio won the overall title with 37 points, followed by Bowling Green (113), Akron (129), Toledo (138), Ball State (151), Western Michigan (159), Central Michigan (172), Miami (177), Eastern Michigan (185), Kent State (240), Buffalo (254) and NIU (277).
NIU is back in action on Saturday, November 11th, as the Huskies travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to participate in the NCAA Regional Championships.
