YPSILANTI, Mich. - A trio of Northern Illinois baseball players earned All-MAC selections as selected by conference coaches Tuesday evening at the site of the league tournament. Closer Matt German was a unanimous first team selection while third baseman Jesse Seykora and second baseman Jordin Hood earned second team recognition. The three all-conference selections are the most for the Huskies since they placed three players on the 2004 All-MAC team.
"Earning three selections on the all-conference teams of a 12-team league is a pretty good achievement," said head coach Ed Mathey. "It shows where Northern Illinois baseball can be and is the type of standard we would like to set."
German, who was a 2006 First-Team All-MAC selection, led the MAC with 32 appearances and ranked second with 12 saves while posting a career-best four victories this season. The Aurora, Ill., native is NIU's career saves leader and ranks second in league history with 25. He won two MAC West Pitcher of the Year honors during the 2007 campaign.
"There were some very good relievers in the league this year and while Matt's numbers were not statistically where they were last season, it is good to see the league coaches recognize his value and what he can do," Mathey said.
Seykora led the Huskies with eight home runs, 41 RBI and 48 runs while ranking among the MAC's top ten in runs, slugging and total bases. The Owantonna, Minn., native earned MAC West Player of the Week honors on March 19.
"Jesse's recognition is definitely warranted and I am very happy to see him rewarded for his hard work," Mathey said. "His bat has been a mainstay in our lineup and his attitude and determination to win has helped us greatly this season."
Hood tied for second on the team with six home runs, scored 30 runs and posted 28 RBI and 10 stolen bases. The Hawthorn Woods, Ill., native tied a school-record with two triples on April 7 at Kent State and earned the MAC West Player of the Week accolade on April 9.
"To earn second-team all-conference in this league as a freshman is a very god accomplishment," Mathey said. "Jordin came in and worked hard and his swing has produced some good tings for us. It will be exciting to see where it goes for him from here. Having a young player named to the all-league team bodes well for the future."
German, Seykora and Hood helped the Huskies to a school-record 16 MAC victories this season, the second-highest overall win total in school history with 32 and a berth in the conference tournament for the first time in three seasons.
