CORVALLIS, Ore. - A late first half goal gave Gonzaga a 1-0 victory over the Northern Illinois men's soccer team, Saturday at the Zaher/Hensor Memorial Tournament.
The Huskies (2-3-3) split the weekend series, having defeated Pac-10 foe Oregon State 1-0, Friday.
The Bulldogs (5-2-0) scored the match's only goal in the 45th minute of play, when George Josten found Phillippe Garre, who put a shot past NIU keeper Joe Zimka.
"We had a bit of a let down in the last 20 seconds of the first half," NIU head coach Steve Simmons said. "That lapse overrode a lot of effort and hard work."
Northern Illinois was outshot 12-6 by Gonzaga, but Simmons believes his team recorded more quality chances.
"We had plenty of opportunities, but failed to capitalize," he said.
The Huskies return to action Wednesday, Sept. 26, when they face Wisconsin in Madison at 6 p.m. Last season, Northern Illinois defeated the Badgers 1-0 in overtime.
