NIU-CMU Game Two
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Northern Illinois softball team fell in both games of a doubleheader with Central Michigan (11-11, 3-1) on Saturday afternoon in NIU's (5-15, 0-2) first Mid-American Conference action of the season. In the MAC opener, the Huskies lost, 2-0, to the Chippewas and followed that with a 4-1 loss in the second game.
Sophomore Kate Greenough (Portland, Ore./David Douglas) pitched well enough to win the first game and added two hits at the plate, but didn't get enough offensive support to do so. Greenough (3-7) lasted the distance, allowing only two earned runs on six hits with three strike outs and no walks.
Central Michigan plated a run in each of the third and fourth frames to propel Kari Seddon (4-6) to a victory after she pitched seven innings, giving up no runs on five hits with eight strike outs and one walk.
In the second game, senior Taryn Hagemann (Rochelle, Ill./Rochelle) started on the mound, but had to leave the game after CMU lead-off hitter Tracy Kaatz singled on a line drive off of her head. Hagemann received stitches, but is fine otherwise and did not return to the game.
Kaatz came around to score after Seddon knocked a singled up the middle of off Freshman Joreigh Landers (Vernonia, Ore./Vernonia), who replaced Hagemann.
NIU countered by scoring a run in the second frame on an odd play. With Landers on second base, Greenough singled on a pop-up that landed only a few feet away from the plate, but when the ball landed it took an abnormal bounce away from the Chippewa fielders and allowed Landers to score from second.
The Chippewas responded with a pair of runs in the third and another run in the fourth to give Ali Pettit (4-5) the win after she pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits with one strike out and two walks.
Landers (2-4) took the loss for NIU, pitching two innings and giving up two earned runs on five hits.
"Our offense is starting to rebound and show what it is capable of," said NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard. "Now we just need to find those timely hits."
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday, April 1 in their home opener versus No. 16 Northwestern (15-9) at 6 p.m. CT at Mary M. Bell Field.
