TOLEDO, Ohio - The Northern Illinois softball team could not get the bats going as the Huskies (10-23, 4-7) dropped a 4-0 decision to Toledo (14-20, 4-9) in a Mid-American Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Scott Park, getting only two hits off Rocket starter Hannah Rockhold.
Rockhold kept the Huskie offense at bay, shutting-out NIU on two hits in seven innings of work with four walks and eight strikeouts. With the win, Rockhold improves to 6-8 on the season.
The Rockets gave Rockhold plenty of support with a four-run second inning off NIU starter Taryn Hagemann (Rochelle, Ill./Rochelle). Mica Sanchez drove in the first run with a single and she later scored on Leslie Strong's two-run triple. Brie Ford capped the inning with an RBI single to give the Rockets a 4-0 lead.
Junior Emily Gooding (Lismore, Australia, Lake Land CC) and freshman Andrea Colosimo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) were the only Huskie hitters to get hits off Rockhold as Gooding knocked a single to center in the second inning and Colosimo singled to right field in the seventh.
Hagemann (Rochelle, Ill./Rochelle) drops to 3-9 on the year after allowing four runs, one earned on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts in two innings. Freshman Joreigh Landers (Vernonia, Ore./Vernonia) continued to pitch effectively as she finished the final four innings for the Huskies, giving up only three hits along with a walk and two strikeouts. She has now thrown 11 consecutive scoreless innings in her last two outings.
NIU wraps up the weekend with another game against Toledo tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Scott Park.
