NORMAL, Ill. - A late rally was not enough to push the Northern Illinois softball team past Illinois State (26-18) on Tuesday evening at Redbird Softball Complex as the Huskies (12-27) came out on the short end of a 5-4 decision.
Down 5-0 entering the sixth inning, the Huskies cut the deficit down to two after an RBI groundout from junior Bailey Ouellette (Beaverton, Ore./Beaverton), a wild pitch that scored junior Jenna Roberts (Verona, Wis./West) and an RBI single by sophomore Allie Parker (Evergreen, Ill./Marist).
The Huskies then loaded the bases in the seventh inning with two outs and scored a run on a walk by freshman Andrea Colosimo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg), putting the tying run on third and the winning run on second. However, NIU was unable to get any closer as Parker hit a grounder to third and senior Krista McPherson (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) was forced out at home to end the game, 5-4.
"We showed fight," said NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard. "With one more key at bat we win this game."
Redbird pitcher Amber Smith (13-7) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts to earn the win.
NIU senior Taryn Hagemann (Rochelle, Ill./Rochelle) dropped to 4-11 as she pitched six frames, giving up four earned runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
McPherson and junior Dani Thompson (Canyon Country, Calif./Canyon) led the offensive attack for the Huskies with a pair of hits a piece. Ouellette, Roberts, Parker, Colosimo, and junior Katie Colby (Waukesha, Wis./West) all tallied a hit for NIU.
The Huskies Finish their regular season next weekend with a four-game homestand, starting with a doubleheader against Miami (Ohio) at 1 p.m. CDT on Friday, May 2 at Mary M. Bell Field.
