DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois wrestling is offering an Early Bird Discount for grapplers who sign up for an NIU Wrestling Camp by May 16.
Camp participants will receive 10 percent off any or all of the camps, which begin June 27 and run through July 17, if they sign up by the Early Bird deadline.
"We welcome young wrestlers to come train with the NIU wrestling staff this summer," 12th-year NIU head coach Dave Grant said. "That's the kind of dedication it takes to become a champion."
The NIU Wrestling Camps clinicians know of just that commitment. Three wrestlers with a total of six NCAA National Championships will be teaching at the camps. The clinicians include the NCAA's 2006 Most Outstanding Wrestler Ben Askren, 2002 World Team member Tim Hartung, and four-time All-American Eric Juergens, all of whom were two-time NCAA National Champions.
"This is a great opportunity to get top instruction from some of the country's elite wrestlers," Grant said.
One of the elite wrestlers in Northern Illinois history will also teach at the camp. Ben Heizer, a two-time All-American and NCAA Runner-Up in 2004, will instruct at the Team, Individual, 15-day and Elite sessions.
"Ben is one of NIU's outstanding wrestlers, and we're honored to have him back to help share his knowledge with the next generation of wrestlers," Grant said.
Camp participants will receive instruction from these special clinicians, in addition to lessons from Grant, the Camp Director. An All-American himself in 1984, Grant has coached three Huskies to All-American status, and was named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in 2002. He will be helped by NIU Associate Head Coach Ryan Ludwig and Assistant Coach Mike Castillo.
In addition to the highest quality clinicians, the NIU Wrestling Camps are held in a five-star facility: The Northern Illinois Convocation Center, a $40-million arena built in 2002.
"We train in one of the Midwest's finest facilities," Grant said. "With 10 mats, air conditioning and a spacious mat layout that accommodates the needs of every wrestler, I think you would be hard-pressed to find a better camp center."
