Round 1 & 2 Results
DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Northern Illinois men's golf team completed the first two rounds of the Davidson Invitational on Monday evening at the River Run Country Club (Par-72, 7,208 yards) as the Huskies ended the day in 12th place with a stroke total of 629.
The Huskies wrapped up a nice first round in a three-way tie with Radford and Davidson for fifth with a score of 302, but fell to 12th after shooting a second round 327, leaving NIU 38 strokes behind leader Liberty (287-304-591). Individually, Wofford's Garrett Medeiros leads the pack with a 140 (70-70, -4).
"We came out and played a pretty solid morning round, tying our best first round score this season," said NIU head coach Tom Porten of his Huskies, who were co-champions with Army last year in the same event. "It rained all day long so the conditions weren't great, but we put ourselves in a good position to defend our championship in the second round. However, we struggled to adjust to the rain in the afternoon and lost our focus, and unfortunately, we never got it back. We will come back out tomorrow with a lot more focus and energy to try to move back up."
Senior Matt Triplett (St. Charles, Ill./East) leads NIU as he sits in a tie for 17th (73-79-152, +8). Junior Jeff Dick (Sherman, Texas/Sherman) is in a tie for 41st (77-82-159, +15), while freshman Griffin Bauman (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) and senior Tim Kay (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) are in a tie for 45th as both shot a 76 in the first round and an 84 in the second round for a total of 160 (+16). Freshman Kurtis Luedtke (Aurora, Ill./West) rounds out the NIU lineup in a tie for 51st (80-82-162, +18).
The Huskies will finish the Davidson Invitational tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) with the final 18 holes.
