DAVIDSON, N. C. - The Northern Illinois men's golf team improved upon yesterday's second round score by 18 strokes in Tuesday afternoon's final round of the Davidson Invitational at the River Run Country Club (Par-72, 7,208 yards), but the Huskies were unable to gain any positions on the competition as NIU finished in 12th place (302-327-309 --- 938, +74).

Liberty entered the day in the lead and finished that way (287-304-305 --- 896, +32) to claim the title away from last year's co-champs Northern Illinois and Army. Individually, Wofford's Garrett Medeiros (70-70-75 --- 215, -1) won the tournament.

NIU senior Matt Triplett (St. Charles, Ill./East) headed the Huskie lineup by finishing in a tie for 28th (73-79-77 --- 229, +13), giving him his best finish of the season. Junior Jeff Dick (Sherman, Texas/Sherman) tied for 40th (77-82-75 --- 234, +18) and freshman Kurtis Luedtke (Aurora, Ill./West) tied for 46th (80-82-77 --- 239, +23). Freshman Griffin Bauman (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) took 50th (76-84-80 --- 240, +24) and senior Tim Kay (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) rounded out the Huskies with a tie for 52nd (76-84-82 --- 242, +26).

"We competed hard today," said NIU head coach Tom Porten. "We hit the golf ball better, but just didn't score as well even though the conditions today were good for scoring. We battled but came up a bit short, and couldn't move up."

The Huskies will return to action next week with their final event of the Fall season, the Austin Peay Invitational, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky on Monday, Oct. 19 and Tuesday, Oct. 20.
