BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A six-run first inning from Michigan State proved too much for the Northern Illinois University softball team to overcome as NIU fell to the Spartans, 10-2 in the second game of the Eighth Annual Magic City Classic Saturday at Shea Brothers Softball Complex.

Michigan State opened the scoring on a two-run double by Lauren Kramer in the bottom of the first inning. Three batters later, Ali Grant drove in two more Spartans on a double to right field. The Huskies (2-5) were an out away from escaping further damage when Heide Purtzer hit a two-run home run, giving Michigan State a 6-0 lead.

They added two more runs in the bottom of the second, before NIU was able to get on the board in the top of the third when Katie Colby (Waukesha, Wis./West) singled driving in Jenna Roberts (Verona, Wis./West) who reached on a two base error. NIU was able to tack on another run in the top of the fourth, but runs in the bottom of fourth and another Purtzer homer in the fifth sealed the Huskies fate.

The Huskies have one more games scheduled for Saturday. NIU's game with Samford at was cancelled due to inclement weather.
