DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University softball team lost its doubleheader with Western Illinois, dropping the first game, 4-0, and losing the second 6-2.
"It's just time for us to get back to work tomorrow and get ready for the weekend," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "We need to be ready for Ball State and Miami."
A five-run fifth inning from the Westerwinds (18-15) proved to be the difference in game two. After falling behind, 1-0, in the first inning, Northern Illinois (11-27) came back in the top of the fourth with two runs.
Allie Parker (Evergreen, Ill./Marist) drove in her first two runs of the season when she tripled down the right field line to score Ashley Cann (Glenwood, Ill./Marian Central) and Krystn Sendejas (Galveston, Texas/Ball).
However, a one-out bases loaded triple by Western's Julie DePolo proved to be the big blow in the Westerwind's five-run fifth.
Joreigh Landers (Vernonia, Ore./Vernonia) suffered the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits in six innings pitched.
Game one was all Western Illinois. The Westerwinds scored first with a run in the second then added a little insurance in the sixth with three more runs. The Huskies offense was limited to four hits on the day.
Northern Illinois continues its seven-game road swing when it travels to Muncie, Ind. to face MAC West leader Ball State. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m. CST.
