Game 2
DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University softball team lost its doubleheader with Toledo, losing game one 4-3 and dropping the second game 5-2, Friday afternoon at Mary M. Bell Field.
"Nobody came to play today," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "We did not perform in any aspect of the game."
The Rockets (3-21, 2-2) jumped on top of the Huskies (9-20, 4-2) early, scoring a run in the first inning of both games.
Toledo built a 3-0 lead in the first game with a run in the first and two in the second. Northern Illinois scored their first run of the game when Bailey Ouellette (Beaverton, Ore./Beaverton) singled to center driving in Andrea Colosimo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) who led off the inning with a double.
The Rockets added an insurance run in the top of the sixth. As it turns out, they would need it. NIU scored two runs in the bottom of the inning. Ouellette came up with Colosimo on first and belted her fourth home run of the season to pull the Huskies to within a run 4-3. However, NIU was unable to score in its last at bat and Toledo held on for the win.
The second game was all Toledo. With the score tied 1-1 after the first inning, the Rockets scored four runs in the second to take a 5-1 advantage. That would be all the offense they would need as the Rockets completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory.
Ouellette continued her solid play at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four RBI on the day, driving all three of NIU's runs in the first game.
The Huskies return to the diamond Saturday afternoon when NIU hosts a doubleheader against Bowling Green. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. Fans can follow all the action live online via GameTracker.
