AKRON, Ohio - Trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh with the bottom of the order due up, the Northern Illinois University softball team scored three runs to post a 4-3 victory over Kent State Friday afternoon at Firestone Stadium.

"We did a good job of putting the ball on the ground and putting the pressure on the defense," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "We talked to them before the game about having a process of what we were going to do offensively. In the last inning we found a way to do it."

The Huskies' (20-36) comeback began when Michelle Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard) was hit by a Kylie Reynolds' pitch to lead off the inning. Joreigh Landers (Vernonia, Ore.Vernonia) came in to pinch run for Williams and advanced to second on a passed ball. Ashley Cann (Glenwood, Ill./Marian Catholic) then singled moving Landers to third and Cann moved into scoring position when she stole second base.

Two batters later, Dani Thompson (Canyon Country, Calif./Canyon), hit the ball right to Reynolds who went home with the throw. The Kent State pitcher's throw home was wild and Landers and Cann scored on the play to tie the game, 3-3. Thompson was able to advance to second on the play, giving the Huskies a runner in scoring position. Zoe Sinner (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) hit the first pitch she saw into center, scoring Thompson from second, giving the Huskies the 4-3 victory.

Northern Illinois scored its four runs, all unearned on five hits and two Kent State (25-26) errors. The Huskie defense played very well, as freshman pitcher Morgan Bittner (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) allowed three runs on eight hits by the Golden Flashes. Kent State did all their scoring in the top of the fifth with three runs on three hits.

"The infield did a good job," Chouinard said. "Overall, I thought the defense did a really good job."

The Huskies return to the field later today when they face Miami University. First pitch is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. CST. Miami (OH) defeated the Huskies 2-1 in the opening game of the tournament.
