KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Northern Illinois women's cross country team concluded action at the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championship, hosted by Western Michigan, Saturday, Oct.30, as the Huskies finished 12th with 323 points in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Sophomore Courtney Oldenburg (West Salem, Wis./West Salem) led the Huskies for the sixth-consecutive competition, when she raced to a time of 22:23.6. Oldenburg, who finished first for NIU at the 2009 championships, finished 40th overall. Claiming the second top spot for the Huskies was freshman Lindsay DeReadt (Woodstock, IL/Woodstock High School/USAF), who completed the race in a time of 22:58.4.
Seniors Sunsea Shaw (South Bend, Ind./Riley High School) and Breanna Brevitt secured third and fourth-place finishes for the Huskies, respectively. Shaw ran the race in a time of 23:40.7, while Brevitt finished in a time of 23:57.5. Clocking in at 24:06, freshman Alexis Capps rounded out the top-five finishers for NIU.
Toledo claimed the Mid-American Conference Champion title, totaling just 44 points. The rockets Ari Fischer was top individual finisher at the championships, running a first-place time of 20:05.8.
With a 12th place finish as the championships, assistant cross country coach Mark McConeghey feels the team's performance is not reflective of their true running capabilities.
"We just didn't run well today," said McConeghey. "I know they can run better than they did. All we can do is put it behind us, and to step up when we run at the NCAA Regionals. We've run better at NCAA, than we have at conference before, and I know that if we figure out a way to step up we will fare much better."
Following this weekend's 2010 MAC Championships, the Huskies will compete in the NCAA Regionals on Nov. 13 in Peoria, Ill.
