NCAA Midwest Regionals Results
PEORIA, Ill.- The Northern Illinois cross country team concluded its 2010 season this Saturday with a 24th-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Midwest Regionals hosted by Bradley at the Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Ill.
Sophomore Courtney Oldenburg paced the Huskies with a time of 22:17.20, finishing 105th overall. Finishing second for the Huskies, Lindsay DeReadt ran a six-kilometer time of 23:08.90 to finish 147th, while senior Sunsea Shaw finished closely behind her Huskie teammates with a time of 23:20.48.
Freshmen Nora Ferguson and Claire Mcauley finished 172nd and 173rd, respectively. Ferguson finished the race in a time of 23:57.76, while McAuley crossed the finish line in a time of 24:02.37. Rounding out the Huskies' top performers were Alexis Capps, who ran a time of 24:08.73, and Jackie Sciacero, who completed the 6k in a time of 25:17.25.
Despite facing tough wind conditions at the competition, Northern Illinois assistant cross country coach Mark McConeghey feels the Huskies had an exceptional outing at the NCAA Midwest Regionals.
"We ran pretty well today," said McConeghey. "It was extremely windy, and everyone on the team almost set a personal record. For the girls to run like that in the wind we experienced today is amazing. We were missing our number three and four runners and we beat three teams. I think we competed hard and we raced very well today."
The Huskies finished 24th of 27 teams at the NCAA Midwest Regionals, averaging a time of 23:21.35. NIU finished ahead of Oral Roberts, Creighton and Southeast Missouri. Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Minnesota claimed the top three places at the regionals
As the 2010 cross country season comes to a close, McConeghey has already started looking ahead toward the upcoming track and field season.
"Today was a great learning experience," said McConeghey. "The girls who competed today will take a couple of weeks off before we start training for the track season."
