Pinehurst Intercollegiate Final Results
PINEHURST, N.C. - After advancing two spots to capture eighth place in yesterday's second round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate the Northern Illinois men's golf team posted a strong finish in the third and final round at the par 72, 7,009 yard Centennial No. 8 to secure an eighth place finish Sunday. In their spring season opener, the Huskies totaled an 897 (301, 298, 298) to tie Eastern Kentucky for eighth, while Virginia Tech won the event with a combined score of 876.
"I am really proud of the team," head men's golf coach Tom Porten said. "We battled through very breezy and cool weather, but we held up very well today. This weekend was our first competition of the spring season, and we had the opportunity to face some strong opponents. I really think this weekend was a fun experience for the team."
Junior Jeff Dick (Sherman, Texas/Sherman) paced the Huskies with a total score of 220 (73, 74, 73, +4). Dick finished among the top-ten athletes at the event when he tied Tommy McDonagh (Penn State) and Wade Wawner (Radford) for eighth place.
" This weekend Jeff showed why he is one of the better players in the Mid American Conference," said Porten. "His eighth place finish is his third top-ten performance of the season. He competed very well and really stepped up and helped lead the team this weekend."
Senior Matt Triplett (St. Charles, Ill./East) and sophomore Griffin Bauman (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) finished the weekend in a tie for 29th-place. Triplett shot a 76 in the final round for a total 220 (72, 77, 76), while Bauman (78, 70, 76) fired a final-round total of 77.
Paul Hammerschmidt (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) finished the weekend in a tie for 62nd, when he compiled a score of 231 (78, 77, 76). Rounding out the Huskie team, Kurtis Luedtke (Aurora, Ill./West) improved his finish by seven strokes when he shot a 73 in the final round to total 232 (79, 80, 73).
"Kurtis really stepped up today," said Porten. "He struggled the first two days, but today he played a solid round of golf. He shot a 73 and his performance really helped us hold our position today."
The Huskies will return to action next weekend when they travel to Del Ray Beach, Fla. to compete in the Florida Atlantic University Invitational, March 26-28.
