DEKALB, Ill. - With the wind blowing in at 25 mph, with gusts up to 33 mph, it was an unusually offensive day from both teams at Mary M. Bell Field as the Northern Illinois University softball team suffered a 12-6 setback to Big Ten foe Northwestern Thursday.
The Wildcats (14-11) scored 12 runs on 12 hits and two Huskie errors, with three three-run innings. Northwestern opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
NIU (8-16), which was aggressive at the plate all game long, responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs. Andrea Colosimo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) drove in Dani Parrish (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) who reached second on a single and error by the shortstop. A double to right center field by freshman Jennifer Barnett (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) scored Colosimo to take a 2-1 lead.
"It's always our strategy [to be aggressive]," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "It [the first pitch] is the first good pitch you see and you should be attacking it. I think we did a great job offensively."
However, Northwestern recaptured the lead with a three-run second. NIU got a run back in the bottom of the third when Colosimo scored as Adriana Sanchez (San Fernando, Calif./Alemany) reached and advanced on an error by the shortstop. Another three-run rally by the Wildcats in the fourth inning extended their lead to 7-3.
NIU pulled to within two, 7-5, with a two-run fifth, but a three-run sixth and a two-run seventh by Northwestern were too much for the Huskies to overcome.
Barnett finished the day 1-for-2 with two RBI, while Colosimo was 1-for-3, with an RBI and three runs scored. Monica Segura (Santa Ana, Calif./Segerstrom Fundamental) suffered the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk in three innings pitched.
Northern Illinois University hits the road this weekend when it travels to Edwardsville, Ill. to face SIU-Edwardsville and South Dakota State in the SIU-Edwardsville Round Robin March 27-28.
