VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Northern Illinois University softball team dropped its doubleheader with Valparaiso, falling 9-0 in the first game and dropping a 14-2 decision in the nightcap Wednesday.
Valparaiso (20-7) scored its nine runs on nine hits and three NIU errors in Game One. The Crusaders took the early lead with a five-run first, and added two runs in the second and third innings. Sara Strickland and Sadie Conner led the way for Valpo with each going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Huskie (10-18) offense was held to one hit on the game, a Whitney Owens (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) single to lead of the top of the third. Owens, who also started the game in the circle for NIU, took the loss after allowing nine runs, six earned, on nine hits and two walks in four innings pitched.
While the NIU offense was a little more productive in the second game, scoring two runs on seven hits, the defense continued to struggle, committing six errors. Freshman Monica Segura (Santa Ana, Calif./Segerstrom Fundamental) took the loss, allowing 14 runs, seven earned, on 11 hits in four innings of work.
Like Game One, the Crusaders jumped on top of the Huskies early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. A five spot in the bottom of the third extended the lead to 7-0. Northern Illinois scored both its runs in the top of the fourth Segura led off the inning with home run to center field, while a Carly Norton (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) sacrifice fly drove in the second run. However, Valpo would score seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach.
Segura went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Ashley Cann (Glenwood, Ill./Marian Catholic) was the only other Huskie with a multi-hit game going 2-for-3 from the plate.
Northern Illinois is back in action Friday when the Huskies welcome Kent State to Mary M. Bell Field for the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams.
