VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Northern Illinois University softball team suffered a 9-0 loss to Valparaiso in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday.

Valparaiso (19-7) scored its nine runs on nine hits and three NIU errors. The Crusaders took the early lead with a five-run first, and added two runs in the second and third innings. Sara Strickland and Sadie Conner led the way for Valpo with each going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Huskie (10-17) offense was held to one hit on the day, a Whitney Owens (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) single to lead of the top of the third. Owens, who also started the game in the circle for NIU, took the loss after allowing nine runs, six earned, on nine hits and two walks.
