SAN DIEGO - The Northern Illinois University softball team dropped the first game of its west coast trip, 5-0, to San Diego State at SDSU Softball Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Aztecs (12-8) scored five runs, four earned on five hits, while the Huskie (1-9) offense struggled at the plate, producing two hits on the night. Californian Michelle Williams (Fresno, Calif./Fresno City College) and Amanda Sheppard (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) each went 1-for-2 on the day accounting for Northern Illinois' offense.
Sophomore Morgan Bittner (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) turned in a solid performance, allowing one unearned run on one hit in three innings of work. A three-run third inning by San Diego State was the only rough inning for Whitney Owens (Pendleton, Ind. Pendleton Heights). The redshirt freshman allowed four runs on four hits, while striking out five batters in three innings of work.
"Morgan did a really good job today moving the ball and Whitney had a few solid innings," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "Obviously we would have liked to limit the walks. From the offensive side, we would like to limit the strikeouts. That seemed to be a big factor for us today."
The Huskies return to the diamond tomorrow night when they face San Diego in doubleheader action. First pitch for game one is set for 5 p.m. Fans can follow all the action live via Gametracker at www.NIUHuskies.com.
