KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Northern Illinois women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision versus host Western Michigan at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo Saturday, in the Huskies' Mid-American Conference regular season finale.
"We were forced to shuffle our lineup around today; Emily (Rogers) was a little banged up, and sat out singles play. But I was proud of the way we adjusted," said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell. "I thought Sara (McLaughlin) really stepped up, and nearly found a way to get a win at No. 3. I can put her anywhere in our lineup, and she's going to compete.
"We'll get some much needed rest next week before preparing for the MAC Tournament. We're the only team in our league to play back-to-back matches in five-straight weekends; that's a ton of tennis. There's a good chance we'll end up in the 8 vs. 9 match-up in the first round, but there is a lot of scenarios to unfold next weekend, so we won't know our opponent for a week or so."
Western Michigan swept all three doubles matches in regulation pro-sets. Emily Dudzik and Jill Pastunink teamed to defeat Brooke Forsberg and Emily Rogers (8-2) at No. 1 doubles; while Kathryn Friedlund and Sara McLaughlin were outlasted at No. 2, 8-5.
The Huskies' third doubles tandem of Kelly Phillips and Stephanie Okuma fell by a score of 8-2. The order of finish in doubles went into the books as follows: 1, 3 and 2.
McLaughlin who was elevated to the No. 3 singles position, won the first set 6-4, before being defeated 6-2 in the second frame. In the ensuing super tie-breaker, McLaughlin fell short versus Yumi Matsuto, 10-7.
The Huskies (7-12, 1-7 MAC) dropped straight-set decisions at the No.1, No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions. The order of finish in singles play was completed in the following order: 1, 5, 6, 4, 2 and 3.
Northern Illinois will return to Kalamazoo in 10 days for the MAC Tournament, scheduled from April 28-May 2. The Huskies will learn the fate of their first-round opponent at the conclusion of next weekend's dual matches.
