BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Northern Illinois University softball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Bowling Green at Meserve Field Saturday afternoon.

A three-run fourth inning by Bowling Green (10-15, 6-3) proved to be be all the offense the Falcons would need on the afternoon.

Freshman Monica Segura (Santa Ana, Calif./Segerstrom Fundamental), who had been cruising through three innings, got into a jam in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases on a lead-off double and back-to-back walks. Her counterpart, Melissa Bott, helped her own cause, dumping a one-out single into short right field driving in two runs to give the Falcons a 2-1 advantage. With the bases loaded and two outs, the Falcons added another run on an infield single by Rachel Proehl to give BG a 3-1 lead after four innings.

Northern Illinois (17-24, 6-5) scored first in the contest after manufacturing a run in the third inning. Kate Welsh (Wilmington, Ill./Bishop McNamara) led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed over to second by Zoe Sinner (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South). Welsh advanced to third on a groundout by Amanda Sheppard (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and scored from third when Andrea Colosimo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) hit a sharp grounder to the shortstop who booted the ball allowing Welsh to score to give NIU a 1-0 lead

Segura fell to 3-9 on the season after allowing three runs on three hits and six walks.

"We just had too many walks today," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said.

Bott picked up the win, while Zada Lines picked up the save. Bott allowed one unearned run, on two hits in five innings of work with Lines pitching final two innings of the game.
