Day One Results
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Through two rounds, 36 holes of the Hawkeye - TaylorMade/adidas Invitational Saturday, the Northern Illinois men's golf team sits in sixth place at the University of Iowa's Finkbine Golf Course.
The Huskies posted a first-round 298 (+10) and second-round 305 (+17) for a 603 (+27) stroke total on Day One at the par 72 course. NIU is just three shots behind Missouri-Kansas City and nine away from Drake and Western Illinois, who are tied for third (594 | +18). The 10-team field is led by host Iowa (586 | + 10).
Two NIU individuals rank in the top 16, while Western Illinois' Kyle Peterman (142 | -2) leads the pack. Jeff Dick paces the Huskies in a tie for 11th, shooting a 74 (+2) in both rounds for a 148 (+4) total. Matt Triplett stands in a tie for 16th after a 75 (+3) and 74 (+2) for a total of 149 (+5). Following rounds of 74 (+2) and 78 (+6), Griffin Bauman's 152 (+8) is good for a 29th-place tie. Greg Pohlmann ended the day in a tie for 36th (75 | 79 | 154 (+10)) and Bryce Emory rounds out the Huskie line-up in 58th (82 | 82 | 164 (+20)). As an independent competitor, Paul Hammerschmidt sits in a tie for 23rd (76 | 75 | 151 (+7)).
"The greens were really tricky with tough hole locations today," said NIU head coach Tom Porten. "Only five individuals had rounds under par and that means the golf course won. Jeff did a nice job in both rounds. We got off to slow starts in both but clawed back. I'm Proud of Jeff and Matt for doing a good job and managing well today. It's good to have Matt back in the line-up for stability. He played good golf today. That's what we expect out of our senior. It was easily his best 36 holes of the spring.
"We are just one really good round away from closing the gap on several teams. It's supposed to be cooler tomorrow morning so we will be ready to get back at it."
The Huskies will wrap the event with the final 18 holes tomorrow.
