BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Northern Illinois University softball team salvaged its four-game weekend trip with a 5-1 victory over Bowling Green at Meserve Field Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies (18-24, 7-5), who split their doubleheader with Toledo on Friday, went 1-1 versus Bowling Green (10-16, 6-4) falling to the Falcons on Saturday before taking the series finale. The Huskie offense pounded out 13 hits with Jennifer Barnett (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) and Andrea Colosimo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) leading the way. Barnett went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, while Colosimo also finished with a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI and a run scored.
"The offense did a good job of scoring in multiple innings," NIU head coach Lindsay Chouinard said. "JB [Jennifer Barnett] has done a great job this week. She's been playing first base and doing a nice job there. It's nice to see the freshmen step up."
Once again, the Northern Illinois offense got off to a fast start against the Falcons. A lead-off double by Amanda Sheppard (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) gave NIU the first scoring opportunity of the game. Colosimo delivered with a one-out single up the middle to score Sheppard from second. Colosimo, who advanced to second on the throw, was driven in when Barnett deposited a two-out single into center field to give NIU a 2-0 lead.
NIU added a run to its lead in the third inning when Barnett drove in her second run of the game singling to left center field allowing Zoe Sinner (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) to score from second base. In the top of the fourth, Colosimo singled to left center field to drive in Sheppard from second base and extend the Huskie advantage to 4-0.
After a BG run in the fourth made the score 4-1, the Huskies got that run back in the top of the sixth when pinch-hitter Dani Parrish (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) doubled to left to score Ashley Cann (Glenwood, Ill./Marian Catholic) from second. Cann, who came into pinch hit, led off the inning with an infield single and stole second to move into scoring position.
Sophomore Morgan Bittner (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) was sharp in her third appearance of the weekend allowing one run on three hits to pick up the win, improving to 13-10 on the season.
"Morgan did a good job a setting the tone for the whole game," Chouinard said. "They really didn't have opportunities to score. Three hits on the day, that's a beautiful performance from her."
Northern Illinois University concludes its six-game road trip when the Huskies travel to Madison, Wis. to face Wisconsin Tuesday in doubleheader action. First pitch for Game One is set for 3 p.m. with the second game to follow. Fans can follow all the action live via Gametracker at NIUHuskies.com.
