NIU Notes

***Huskie newcomers who played in their first game: Jimmie Ward (Fr.), Michael Cklamovski, Joe Windsor (Fr.), Demetrius Stone, Akeem Daniels (Fr.), Jasmin Hopkins, Mathew Sims (Fr.).

***Other players who saw their first : Matt Krempel, Jared Volk, Stephen O'Neal - redshirt freshmen

***New Starters: MLB Devon Butler, S Tommy Davis, LG Logan Pegram, C Scott Wedige, RT Keith Otis.

In addition, Tyrone Clark made his second career start and Martel Moore made his third.

***Northern Illinois junior safety Tracy Wilson collected his first career interception late in the first half and sophomore linebacker Tyrone Clark added his first career INT in the third period. D.J. Pirkle had the second fumble recovery of his career in the second quarter.

***NIU matched their 2009 season-best turnover day with three. The Huskies collected three turnovers on three occasions last year (vs. Wisconsin, Purdue and Toledo).

***Freshman kicker Mathew Sims earned his first career points on a 19-yard field goal on the opening drive of the second half. Sims, a true freshman from Hannibal, Mo., was good on his first career field goal attempt and added a PAT.

***Sophomore end Sean Progar earned the first sack of the season for NIU with a four-yard takedown in the third quarter. Progar was the Huskies' second-leading sacker a year ago.

***Northern Illinois lost its seventh-straight season-opening game with all seven of those played away from Huskie Stadium, including six road games and one at Chicago's Soldier Field. The Huskies' last season-opening victory was the 20-13 overtime win over #15 Maryland in the 2003 season opener at Huskie Stadium.

***Northern Illinois limited Iowa State to just 28 rushing yards on 20 carries in the second half after the Cyclones had 17 rushes for 110 yards in the first half. Of those 138 total rushing yards, 63 came on Alexander Robinson's 63-yard touchdown run.

***NIU quarterback DeMarcus Grady, making his sixth career start, posted career highs in completions (14) and attempts (29). His previous highs in those categories came versus Akron last year when he was 10-of-18. Grady's rushing touchdown was the fifth rushing score of his career and his first since the Eastern Michigan last year. He recorded just one rushing TD a year ago but had three in 2008.

***2009 leading tackler Tracy Wilson picked up where he left off with a team-best 10 tackles. Wilson total was one off his career-best 11 made last year at Wisconsin in the season opener.

***NIU is now 1-3 versus Iowa State and 4-10 versus teams from the Big XII all-time.
