AUSTIN, Texas - The Northern Illinois University softball team suffered an 8-4 loss in the first game of a doubleheader against No. 15 Texas at the Texas Classic, Saturday afternoon at McComb Field.

The Huskies (0-3) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two in the second. Dani Parrish (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) scored on an Adriana Sanchez (San Fernando, Calif./Alemany) sacrifice fly in the first inning. An RBI single by Jennifer Barnett (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) in the top of the second plated the Huskies' second run of the game, while Parrish's RBI single later in the frame gave NIU a 3-0 lead.

However, Texas (3-0) stormed back with two runs in the bottom of the third and four in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-3 advantage. The big blow came on a three-run homer by Taylor Hoagland in the bottom of the fourth.

The Longhorns tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 8-3. NIU responded with a run in the top of the seventh but that would be as close as the Huskies would get.

The NIU offense had its chances, but it left 12 runners on base leaving the bases loaded twice, once in the second and again in the sixth.

Parrish continues to her hot streak at the plate. She went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Amanda Sheppard (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) was also solid offensively, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Northern Illinois continues play in the Texas Classic when NIU faces the host No. 15 Texas Longhorns in the second game of its doubleheader. First pitch for Game 2 is set for 6:30 p.m. Fans can follow all the action of both contests live via Gametracker at NIUHuskies.com or they watch it live via TexasSports.tv at texassports.com.
